FAS Senate condemns the Russian invasion of Ukraine

March 9, 2022

Dear FAS Colleagues,

We, the signed members of Yale Faculty Senate, condemn the unprompted and unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, a democratic nation, by Russia. Universities are central to the defense of democracies, as they share with democracies the principles of free and unfettered debate, and the ability to challenge authority in the pursuit of truth. As scholars, we reject the erasure of history imposed by an imperialist narrative to justify the invasion of a peaceful, sovereign nation. Finally, we are deeply concerned for our academic colleagues and their students who are trapped by the attack, for those in need of humanitarian aid, for our own community members with family and friends in Ukraine, and for Russian citizens protesting their criminal regime.

For more information and links to ways you can help, please see Professor Timothy Snyder’s compilation, a list circulated by Yale students at the February 28th rally. Also, scientists can support displaced Ukrainian scientists using this form to be added to this database.
